THEMES:

COMBATING AGEISM AND AGE DISCRIMINATION

Discrimination against individuals based on their age has serious consequences for older people in impacting their health as well as affecting public policy. These prejudicial attitudes and negative stereotypes often become engrained in health and social care systems where older people require the most support.

TOWARD HEALTHY AGEING

The WHO defines healthy ageing in a more holistic nature as developing and maintaining functional ability based on a life-course approach to well-being in older age. The concept of healthy ageing has become more relevant as population ages with the need for health policies and strategies to focus more on prevention and treatment.

 AGE FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENTS

Optimizing functional ability toward a decade of healthy ageing for individuals will require policies, systems and services that understand and optimize trajectories of ability across the life course. At a population level, dynamic strategies are necessary to not only aim to raise overall levels of ability but to paying particular attention to those subpopulations with the least resources or lowest level of functional ability.

ADDRESSING INEQUALITIES

Diversity is often overlooked in many policies and programs aiming to improve the health and well-being of the ageing population. Marginalized older adults typically have greater exposure to health risks and difficulty accessing appropriate services leading to a decreased quality of life.
