Joan Braun is an assistant professor at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law at Lakehead University. She has two Master’s degrees, one in law and one in social work, and is a PhD candidate in law at the University of BC. The focus of her research and teaching at Bora Laskin is aging and the law. In 2020, she developed a course in elder law, which she has taught for the past three years. She also teaches alternate dispute resolution and criminal law. Her research focuses on the impact of laws on older adults, with a particular focus on issues related to elder abuse and mental capacity. She currenty is a co-investigator on a SHHRC funded research project examining mental incapacity in the context of abuse or neglect and recently completed a research project on criminal law responses to elder abuse. She sits on a number of national and international committees, including the Canadian Bar Association’s national elder law section executive. She also is the co-chair of the Association For Conflict Resolution’s Elder Mediation Section.
