''The South Asian community is the fastest growing visible minority group in Toronto (having grown by 40% since 1996). Studies show that a large percentage of residents within this community are living in poverty and fall into the low-income category. Given this context, there is a demonstrated need to provide older adults with information about their rights and how best to access services and supports they might need.

The webinar will provide an overview of the services and supports offered by SALCO and other parts of Legal Aid Ontario, specific to older adults, and will discuss the current issues South Asian older adults are facing, related to experiences of elder abuse. Through an examination of real-life case scenarios, Shalini Konanur (Executive Director for the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario), will acquaint participants of legal rights of South Asian older adults, the complexities and barriers they face in accessing services and providing an understanding of collaborative intervention approaches.

Learning Objectives:

  • Current issues facing older adults residing in South Asian Communities, including immigration concerns and settlement supports.
  • Risk factors attributed to financial abuse, violence or harm by family members.
  • Overcoming access barriers to legal services and supports.
  • Legal options and protections specifically for older women facing domestic violence.
  • Approaches to empowering older adults through training about their legal rights.
  • Provincial resources/services for older adults.
