Stopping Older Person Gender-Based Violence in Women 55+ Through Promising Practices (STOP-GBV 55+)
Project Overview
What:
The STOP-GBV 55+ Project aims to strengthen supports for older women and gender-diverse people experiencing GBV by developing promising practice tools for service providers who serve them. The identified tools will have an intersectional lens, be person-centered, and trauma and violence informed.
This is a 5-year nationwide project involving a diverse group of partners across many sectors including shelters, interval and transition housing, violence against women, elder abuse, new Canadians, and community support services for older adults. Particular attention will be given to women experiencing systemic barriers and oppression including Indigenous women, members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, women residing in northern, rural, and remote communities, immigrant and refugee women, women living with a disability, and Francophone women.
Why:
Most screening and intervention tools addressing violence against women have been designed for younger women. The specific needs of women over 55 years of age experiencing gender-based violence - a generation all too often overlooked in communication and prevention efforts around intimate partner violence, consent, and sexual violence, represents a significant knowledge gap for those providing services to this population.
How:
The CNPEA and project partners will connect with a broad range of service providers across Canada with experience supporting survivors of GBV to ascertain whether the tools they currently use are appropriately addressing the needs of older women. A longer-term goal is to develop a series of promising practices for service providers and organizations to enhance their capacity to effectively outreach and respond to the needs of older women experiencing GBV. Identifying how specific groups are overlooked in the provision of services will assist in strengthening the resources necessary to address service provision gaps.

On March 24, 2022, CNPEA and partners launched Future Us: A Roadmap to Elder Abuse Prevention.

What is Future Us?
Future Us is a pan-Canadian engagement strategy. It examines where we are now and where we need to go. It provides clear goals and recommendations at the individual, community and government levels to help us build an integrated approach for elder abuse prevention in communities across Canada.
Our partners
Last year, we gathered a team of partners that includes the Centre for Research and Education on Violence against Women and Children (CREVAWC), Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario (EAPO), the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE), CanAge, the Canadian Centre for Elder Law (CCEL), Egale Canada, and the International Longevity Centre Canada (ILC Canada).
We led consultations across the country with leaders from provincial/territorial elder abuse prevention networks, advocates, professionals, and government staff to inform our work. The result is Future Us.
Future Us Goals
There are committed citizens across the country who are working to create safer, more supportive communities for people of all ages. Future Us is a tool to harness and mobilize that collective energy for change, tapping into existing networks to engage local elected politicians and the broader public to achieve common goals.
Future Us sets out three broad goals:
1- Prioritize elder abuse prevention in every community.
2- Establish and support elder abuse prevention networks at local, regional and national levels. Networks are critical infrastructure for information-sharing, knowledge mobilization, research, and ongoing engagement across sectors and communities.
3- Teach everyone to recognize warning signs of abuse and neglect, how to respond safely and effectively, and where to refer in the community to find help.
Elder abuse is preventable, and you can help. This roadmap outlines clear roles and actions to help us work collectively toward safer communities. We hope that Future Us will be useful to guide you in your efforts.

ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR OLDER VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT
Project funded by the Justice Canada Victims Fund
Full title: “Increasing Access to Justice for Older Adult Victims of Sexual Assault: A Capacity Building Approach”
Project timeline: April 1, 2017 – March 31, 2020

Outcomes: New training and learning for service providers. CNPEA will gather, curate and synthesize an up-to-date array of resources and materials on the hub about sexual assault of older adults and sexual assault of older adults who also are disabled.
Resources will include:
- 6 training webinars
- Materials outlining the unique needs of older adult victims of sexual assault, and older adult victims who have cognitive or physical disabilities,
- Information and materials about relevant sexual assault laws and criminal justice processes,
- Information and materials about available programs and supports for victims.
This project will involve:
- A comprehensive review of existing resources across Canada.
- Adding resources to the hub. These will be selected based on recommendations by elder abuse experts, including provincial organizations and networks to help us find best practice tools, policies, recent research etc.
- Providing 2 webinars/year addressing specific knowledge and training gaps identified during our review.
Although topics are TBD, the webinars will meet the following goals:
- 3 webinars for senior-serving professionals about sexual assault laws and the criminal justice system, and practical tips on assisting older victims.
- 3 webinars for criminal justice system personnel about the unique needs of older adult victims, including additional barriers they may face due to disability.

THE FAMILY VIOLENCE
INITIATIVE FUND (2016-2017)
The Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse is the proud recipient of the Family Violence Initiative Fund from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
This grant enables CNPEA to conduct a review of existing material and to add key resources on the Hub about abuse of older adults in a family context. These new resources, paired with webinars aim to raise awareness and will provide important information for stakeholders, victims, and their loved ones, about the available resources, strategies, laws and law enforcement response across Canada.
As part of the Preventing Family Violence Against Elders Resource Development Project, the CNPEA Hub has delivered
- Stand-alone resources about elder abuse in the context of family violence, from research to relevant laws, and law enforcement activities and programmes in each jurisdiction.
- Two webinars for professionals working with seniors about relevant laws, research, current trends, how to report elder abuse crimes to the police etc. (Look out for our webinars in October 2016 and February 2017)
