"It's Not Right!" is funded by New Horizons for Seniors Program, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. The Centre for Research & Education on Violence against Women & Children will partner with the Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse to:
- Engage and prepare bystanders (neighbors, friends and family members) to take safe and effective action when they see warning signs of abuse of older adults.
- Train elder abuse awareness leaders in all provinces/territories to deliver the intervention workshop. The workshop DVD and training manual will be available online.
- Change the social norm for bystanders from social tolerance of abuse to social responsibility.
"The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association is pleased to introduce "Facing Abuse of Older Adults" as an addition to its collection of online professional development courses. The primary objective of this course is to increase the number of dental hygienists across the country who are knowledgeable in detecting, and confident in advocating against elder abuse and neglect.
Successful completion of this course will provide an enhanced understanding of the factors that are seen to explain abuse and neglect of older persons and why the problem persists in our society. The course will present a background of the causal dynamics found in families and institutions and explore the effects of discrimination and diversity, ethno cultural aspects and aboriginal concepts. This information will add to your self-confidence in recognizing and acting on possible situations of abuse or neglect of older clients. Complimentary to this course is a three part webinar series."
"Workshops on Creating Safe Communities for Older Adults have been conducted in a number of communities over the past several months. The goal of these workshops is two-fold:
- Raise awareness and educate about abuse of older adults; and
- Engage the community in the development of an action plan to address abuse of older adults through a community support network
The two-day events facilitated by Society staff are part of a larger project of the Northwest Territories Seniors’ Society entitled, Leading the Way, Networking to Prevent Abuse of Older Adults. The Society is carrying out this work in partnership with recently created NWT Network to Prevent Abuse of Older Adults. Funding is being provided by the HRSDC, New Horizons for Seniors Program and the GNWT Departments of Health and Social Services and Executive. The workshop generally includes different PowerPoint presentations, providing an overview of the Society and topics discussed during the two days. They are also sometimes used by guest speakers, such as the local RCMP detachment representatives." Funded by New Horizons for Seniors (Employment and Social Development Canada) and with the help of experts from Prevent Elder Abuse Manitoba, this program is designed for credit union employees. It provides an "in-depth look at how older members can become victims of financial abuse by family members, trusted friends or caregivers. True-to-life video scenarios show examples of how the credit union can help.
The training program will increase your ability to recognize financial abuse, review your options and respond in constructive ways. The course, developed by Tamlo International Inc., explores topics based on abuse of assets, credit and Power of Attorney. It ends with a short test and includes downloadable reference material as well as links to federal, provincial and local services."
