Earlier in November, the Canadian Centre for Elder Law, in collaboration with the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia, hosted the 2017 Canadian Elder Law Conference. In the span of two days, the conference addressed a number of topics ranging from neglect to capacity, evidence, mediation and more. In this blog post, I will provide an overview of the different sessions, panels and speakers, and will focus on emerging ideas that relate to the scope of CNPEA’s current project.

Seniors’ Advocate Appointed
The Honourable Perry Trimper, Speaker of the House of Assembly, today announced the appointment of Dr. Suzanne Brake as the Seniors’ Advocate, effective immediately.
The Seniors’ Advocate Act was passed by the House of Assembly on December 14, 2016, and came into effect upon proclamation by the Lieutenant Governor in Council on July 5, 2017.
“The Office of the Seniors' Advocate will work with seniors and other key stakeholders to identify, review, and analyze systemic issues; make independent recommendations; and promote awareness to the general public. Dr. Brake’s experience in work focused on seniors issues will be a valuable asset to the office, and I wish her well as she assumes her new role.”Honourable Perry Trimper, Speaker of the House of Assembly
The appointment was confirmed by resolution of the House of Assembly on November 7, 2017, as per Section 4 of the Seniors’ Advocate Act.
The newly established Office of the Seniors’ Advocate is located in the Sir Brian Dunfield Building, 3rd Floor, 2 Canada Drive, St. John’s. They can be reached at 709-729-6603.

CNPEA is looking for expert media delegates and you could be one of them!
The Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse wishes to provide a coherent and unified voice on key points relating to elder abuse. Our communications policy and practices are guided by the belief that the CNPEA should be a credible, forthcoming source of information on elder abuse across Canada.
With this goal in mind, we are curating a list of designated expert delegates to help us respond to increasing media requests requiring a specific geographic response or area of expertise.

BACKGROUND
The Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (CNPEA) is seeking proposals for a consultant/ researcher for a three-year project entitled “Increasing Access to Justice for Older Adult Victims of Sexual Assault: A Capacity Building Approach” (“Increasing Access Project”).
The consultant must have strong research skills with knowledge and expertise on issues related to elder abuse, sexual assault, disability and the law. The researcher will be required to review literature, identify and evaluate existing resources for professionals working in the field, and write high quality academic reports. The researcher must have relevant academic training at a graduate level and previous experience with similar projects. Experience supervising a graduate level research assistant also would be an asset.
